What is the difference between an electricity distributor and a supplier?

We are an electricity distributor, and we deliver electricity to your home or office through low, medium, or high-voltage networks.

Expanding the power grid by connecting new consumers.
Maintenance, investments for modernization.
Interventions in the grid during power outages.
Installing meters and measuring consumption.

There are several power grid operators nationwide, and each covers one or more regions. For example, we operate in Banat (Arad, Caraș-Severin, Hunedoara, and Timiș counties), Muntenia (Bucharest, Ilfov, and Giurgiu counties), and Dobrogea (Călărași, Constanța, Ialomița, and Tulcea counties).

If you live in another county, you need to contact the power grid operator in that area. It’s important to know that you cannot change your electricity distributor. The network in a county—composed of transformer stations, poles, underground and overhead cables, meters, telecontrol systems, and more—is the responsibility of a single power grid operator.

As a power grid operator, we ensure that you have electricity at home or in the office with as few and as short interruptions as possible. To use the electricity we bring near your home or business, you need to sign a supply contract with a supplier. The supplier you choose will, in turn, sign a contract with the distribution operator in your area.

Your electricity supplier

Enter the POD code of your consumption point to find out who your electricity supplier is.

POD

The POD is an identification code for your electricity consumption point as it appears in the distributor’s records. Its format varies depending on your electricity distributor. You can find the POD on the bill you receive from your electricity supplier.

How do we measure electricity consumption?

Your supplier will send you monthly bills for your electricity consumption. You can also purchase certain products and services from your supplier, such as air conditioning units or emergency interventions if, for example, you need an electrician. Unlike distribution activities, supply is not limited to specific areas of the country, and you can change your supplier at any time, no matter where you live.

Apart from the electricity distributor and supplier, other key players in the national energy system, besides consumers, are: producers (such as wind farms, photovoltaic plants, hydropower plants, nuclear plants, and others), the national carrier (Transelectrica), and the markets where energy is sold, managed by OPCOM (the energy exchange) and the Commodity Exchange.
